For Advocates

How to help someone appeal

  • The advocate or support person needs to help the person appealing present their case by assisting them to obtain relevant support documentation and working with the person to clarify their needs for the housing service.
  • You may be able to assist the person in considering options available to them and put them in touch with other agencies where this may assist them with housing or other problems.
  • Ideally advocates should encourage the person appealing to speak for themselves rather than have the advocate speak for them.
  • If a person or client wants an advocate to speak on their behalf to the Housing Appeals Committee, they will need to provide written permission.
